It has been discovered that England has more distilleries than Scotland since the records even began and it’s all because of the craft gin craze.
After looking at the official figures from HMRC, last year it was recorded that the UK had at least 361 distilleries.
160 of those distilleries were based in Scotland, whilst the other 166 were based in England and around 15 of those distilleries are based in Yorkshire.
A reason for the growth you may ask? Gin. A rising thirst for gin has driven distilleries in England to up their game, with the distilleries increasing by 620% since 2010.
According to the trade alliances end of year report, the overall value of gin sales in the UK were £1.9 billion last year and from a report taken by the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA), it was recorded that in the UK more than 66 million bottles of gin were sold.
